Tom Bosley, the American doer best known for playing the patient, understanding father on Happy Days, has died. He was 83.

Bosley died Tuesday of centre failure at a hospital near his home in Palm Springs in the rear of a battle with lung cancer.

As Howard Cunningham in Happy Days, which debuted in 1974, Bosley brought understated humour to the role of the exasperated beget of Richie Cunningham (Ron Howard).

Bosley recalled in a 1986 interview that he at first turned down the role in the line about teen life in the 1950s.

“After rereading the pilot script, I changed my note because of a scene between Howard Cunningham and Richie. The adopt/son situation was written so movingly, I fell in love through the project,” he said.
