Invention of Dr. Nakamats

An inventor, entrepreneur and celebrity in his native Japan, Yoshiro Nakamatsu – known as Dr. Nakamats – holds 3,357 patents, more than triple the number credited to Thomas Edison. He is also a world-class eccentric, having photographed and analyzed every meal he has eaten for the past 34 years. He predicts that he will live to be 144, and given his vitality, he has a good chance. Among his inventions: the floppy disk, a water-powered pedicab, a notebook that’s usable underwater and a substance he calls Love Jet, intended to redress Japan’s declining birthrate. But he has a less amiable side: Dr. Nakamats is not a humble man, and he can drive a very hard bargain when necessary. There’s a telling scene when his children try to give him a birthday gift and he makes them do it over because the presentation isn’t right. The director, Kaspar Astrup SchrС†der, has created a deadpan profile that resembles Errol Morris’ films.
